Who are the Parents of John the Baptist in the Bible?

They were both righteous in the sight of God, blameless in their obedience to all of God’s commandments and requirements.

However, they were childless because Elizabeth was barren, and they were both well advanced in years. One day, while Zechariah was serving as a priest in the temple of the Lord, he was chosen by lot to enter the sanctuary of the Lord to burn incense. While he was inside, an angel of the Lord appeared to him and announced that his prayer for a child had been heard and that his wife would bear him a son whom they were to name John.

The angel also told Zechariah that their son would be filled with the Holy Spirit from birth, and he would go on to prepare the way for the Lord’s coming.

John the Baptist’s father was Zechariah, a priest of the temple in Jerusalem. Zechariah and his wife Elizabeth were well advanced in years and had never been able to have children. One day, as Zechariah was serving in the temple, he was visited by an angel who told him that he and Elizabeth would finally have a child.

The angel also said that their son would be called John and would be a great man of God. Zechariah was skeptical at first, but sure enough, Elizabeth became pregnant soon after. When it came time for John to be born, his parents named him according to the angel’s instructions.

What Happened to the Parents of John the Baptist?

The parents of John the Baptist, Zechariah and Elizabeth, were both righteous in God’s sight and blameless in their observance of all the Lord’s commandments and requirements. Nevertheless, they were childless because Elizabeth was barren, and they were both getting on in years. One day, while Zechariah was serving as a priest before God in the temple at Jerusalem’s Mount of Olives, he was visited by an angel of the Lord.

The angel told him that his prayers for a son had been heard and that he would have a son whom he was to name John. The child would be filled with the Holy Spirit from birth, turn many people back to God their father, and prepare them for the coming of Christ (Luke 1:13-17). Zechariah doubted this promise from the angel because of his own advanced age and Elizabeth’s barrenness; as a result, he was struck mute until John’s birth (Luke 1:18-20).

Some time after John’s birth but before his circumcision eight days later (as required by Jewish law), Zechariah regained the power of speech.

What Happened to John the Baptist Parents

When John the Baptist was born, his father Zechariah was filled with the Holy Spirit and prophesied about his son, saying that he would “be called a prophet of the Most High” and would “go before the Lord to prepare his way.” (Luke 1:76) After John had been preaching and baptizing in the wilderness for some time, Herod Antipas, who ruled over the region where John was active, heard about him and was curious. Herod asked John to baptize him, but John rebuked him instead. (Mark 6:14-29)

This made Herod very angry, and he imprisoned John. Later, when Herod’s birthday came around, his daughter danced for him and pleased him so much that he promised her anything she wanted. She asked for John the Baptist’s head on a platter, and Herod reluctantly had John executed.

(Mark 6:21-29) John’s parents must have been devastated by their son’s death. We are not told what happened to them after that point in Scripture.

It is possible that they continued to live in Judea and were eventually killed during the Jewish revolt against Rome in 66 AD.

Zechariah was an old man when John the Baptist was born. He was already married and had children of his own. The exact age of Zechariah is not known, but he was definitely older than most fathers when their sons are born.

This is because Zechariah and his wife, Elizabeth, were unable to have children until late in life. When John the Baptist was finally born, it was a cause for great celebration among family and friends. All who knew them rejoiced that God had finally given them this special gift.

Who Announced the Birth of John the Baptist

The birth of John the Baptist was announced by an angel to his father Zechariah while he was serving as a priest in the temple. When Zechariah asked how this could be, since he and Elizabeth were old, the angel said it was because God had spoken and it would come to pass. This event took place during the reign of King Herod.
